Data Transformation

Trace data pipelines, define transformation rules and test quality conditions.

Trace and test data transformations

Rory traces priority data from source to consumer, documents transformation rules and tests quality conditions. The review identifies whether an existing pipeline should be repaired, replaced or retained.

What Rory reviews and configures

  • Trace and amend specified ETL or ELT pipelines using Microsoft or open-source tools
  • Configure Databricks Delta Live Tables and lineage for named pipelines alongside existing platform components
  • Compare streaming, micro-batch and batch patterns against latency, cost and support requirements
  • Define validation checks, lineage records, transformation rules and exception owners
  • Document legacy and hybrid dependencies before configuring an agreed migration or integration
  • Test compute, storage and query changes against agreed performance and cost conditions

Tools and implementation patterns

  • Configure Azure Data Factory, Synapse Pipelines or Fabric Dataflows for specified ingestion dependencies
  • Configure Databricks Delta Live Tables, Unity Catalog and Workflows for named transformations, access rules and owners
  • Create or amend dbt projects, notebooks and SQL Server connectors for documented transformation rules
  • Configure Great Expectations, dbt and Azure Monitor checks, alerts and lineage capture for agreed conditions
  • Configure Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions deployment checks and record release procedures by environment

Pipeline problems to review

Manual reconciliation, undocumented transformation logic and slow refreshes make data difficult to support. Rory traces failed or disputed records, documents the responsible rule and owner, and configures agreed validation and alert conditions.

Trace, configure and hand over

  1. Discover dependencies: Map source systems, integration constraints and data consumers against stakeholder requirements.
  2. Configure the flow: Amend agreed transformations and orchestration, then configure observability and data-quality checks.
  3. Test and hand over: Test performance and quality conditions, document lineage and owners, and confirm the receiving team can operate the pipeline.

Accountable pipeline work

Rory leads the pipeline review, records the evidence for recommendations and remains accountable for the engagement. His experience across healthcare, SMEs and public-sector environments informs reviews of lineage, access and support procedures. Any associate is named and limited to an agreed engineering task and acceptance condition.

Our approach

How we partner

Each step is transparent, evidence-first and limited to what you actually need.
  1. Compass illustration

Step 1 Review goals and systems

Review the goals, current systems, constraints and owners so the work targets the real problem.
  2. Blueprint illustration

    Step 2 Design the path

Set out the options, the evidence behind them and the acceptance checks, then agree the next practical step.
  3. Rocket launching illustration

    Step 3 Deliver & evolve

Where delivery follows, move in small, agreed increments, keep the evidence visible, and hand over so your team can sustain it.
